Small-scale aquaculture makes a large contribution to aquaculture production and rural livelihood development on a global scale. Small-scale aquaculture possesses the potential to provide income generation and livelihoods, and enhance food security and quality of life for rural communities.

EFA has undertaken numerous projects investigating, developing and implementing small-scale aquaculture programmes to create sustainable rural livelihoods. Projects have been undertaken on inland systems within Malawi and KwaZulu Natal as well as for small communities along the coastal regions of South Africa.
